Joining WA-1
We appreciate your interest in learning more about our team. Our volunteer team is comprised of physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, pharmacists, pharmacy assistants, paramedics, EMT/fire fighters, logistics, administrative and communication support staff.
WA-1 members volunteer their time and expertise to attend team meetings, training drills, field exercises and actual deployments. When we are activated to respond to disasters, our team members become temporary federal employees for the duration of the deployment. Deployments include workman's compensation, liability coverage and licensure reciprocity and government service rating compensation during the time of deployment.
Typically the team is first-up (a.k.a. on-call) every 4 months. In case of a possible deployment the team is put on alert status. Once on alert status the team may only be given a few hours to one day to be ready for departure. Once on deployment you may be requested to stay up to 14 days. As a result of the quick turnaround for deployment and length of time away from your jobs and family, we ask for a serious commitment prior to joining the team.
